For Postdoctoral Fellows
A Message from the Postdoctoral Training Office
Postdoctoral Fellows are crucial and vital members of the scholarship ecosystem at City of Hope. City of Hope is a collegial and inclusive academic environment and the PTO strives to ensure that all our postdoctoral scholars have a voice. We believe that postdocs should receive a majority of mentorship from their laboratory principle investigator, and the PTO is here to provide infrastructure to aid in career development and supply some tools for daily life.
In addition to their fundamental research, it is our goal that our postdocs be given tools to learn the basics of academic survival and career development. As such we provide training in grantsmanship and other basic skills such as curriculum vitae preparation, giving scientific presentations, and interviewing for your next position. It is our ambition that your postdoctoral training at City of Hope will be a productive and career expanding experience.
The PDA was founded in 2000 by Michael Reed, Ph.D., a postdoctoral fellow in the Division of Biology. The PDA encourages postdoctoral fellows to interact with each other and with graduate students and provides opportunities for educational, professional and social growth.
Postdoctoral Research Training Fellowships in DNA Damage Response and Oncogenic Signaling (DNADRS)
This program prepares recent (two years or fewer) postdoctoral fellows for the interconnected fields of DNA damage response and DNADRS.
Postdoctoral Research Training Fellowships in Cancer Metabolism
The goal is to provide an innovative curriculum and mentored research that trains an elite group of highly motivated fellows to become successful, independent researchers in cancer metabolism.
Every new City of Hope Employee will attend the general New Employee Orientation. However, the Postdoctoral Training Office provides an additional orientation to address your specific needs and concerns as a postdoctoral fellow. You will have the opportunity to meet the PTO staff and other postdocs, as well as key representatives from Benefits, Immigration, Library Services, Scientific Writing, Sponsored Research, and the Postdoctoral Association.
The PTO is excited to announce a new training program for all postdocs at City of Hope. The intention of APT is to provide opportunities for building specific career skills that are important for professional scientists, but that are not the focus of the scientific training postdocs receive in lab from their mentors.
City of Hope actively helps our postdocs obtain research funding and fellowship grants. Our Office of Faculty and Institutional Support will connect you with the funding sources best suited to your needs, and assist you in the preparation of your project plan.
City of Hope postdocs earn salaries consistently higher than the National Institute of Health (NIH) standard. As of January 2024, 1st year postdocs are compensated $70,720 annually.
