Our Office of Faculty and Institutional Support will connect you with the funding sources best suited to your needs, and assist you in the preparation of your project plan. Our Office of Sponsored Research will submit your applications and ensure they meet all mandated guidelines.

Funding Databases and Selected Fellowships

Federal Grants (Grants.gov) - Grants.gov allows organizations to electronically find and apply for more than $400 billion in federal grants. Grants.gov is the single access point for more than 1,000 grant programs offered by all federal grant-making agencies.

GrantForward - The grants database service GrantForward replaces IRIS (Illinois Researcher Information Service). The site maintains extensive information on funding for the sciences, social sciences and humanities. Though COS and GrantForward do contain like information, they each also contain funding opportunities not listed in the other. Register or update your profile to receive funding alerts of all new opportunities in your discipline.

Grant Writing Workshops

Upcoming offerings
  • The City of Hope PTO offers triannual proposal writing cohorts in which four postdocs are paired with a senior faculty mentor to engage open critique of developing proposals. Calls for participation will are circulated in  March, July, and November. Participation is first come-first serve, and the number of cohorts in a given session depends on faculty availability.
  • Please contact the PTO for information in upcoming opportunities.
     
Past offerings
  • Crafting a Compelling Abstract: Hands-on workshop to learn how to develop a well-organized abstract that makes your point clearly in a limited amount of space with a peer and instructor review component at the end of the workshop.
  • Hands-on F32 and K99 Writing Workshop: Participants will have the opportunity to develop drafts of NIH F32 and NIH K99 applications, potentially for submission during the next fellowship cycle. By the end of the 2-hour workshop, participants should have a detailed outline of their proposal.

NIH Career Development Awards (“K” AWARDS)

What are NIH K awards?
K awards provide support for senior postdoctoral fellows or faculty-level candidates. K awards are designed to promote the career development of specific groups of individuals based on their past training and career stage.  The objective of K programs is to bring candidates to the point where they are able to conduct their research independently and are competitive for major grant support.Types of K transition awards
 
What is a K99/R00 award?
Often called the “Pathway to Independence” award. It supports an initial mentored research experience (K99) followed by independent research (R00) for highly qualified, postdoctoral researchers, to secure an independent research position. Award recipients are expected to compete successfully for independent R01 support during the R00 phase.
 
NIH Reporter Research Portfolio Online Reporting Tool; provides access to reports, data, and analyses of NIH research activities, information on NIH expenditures and the results of NIH supported research.
 
NIH Matchmaker recently enhanced to make it just as easy to identify NIH program officials whose portfolios include projects in your research area, as well as NIH-funded projects similar to your supplied abstracts, research bios, or other scientific text.
 
National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease (NIAID) provides several examples and templates for grant applications.  Unfortunately, there is no K99/R00 example.

What is the BRAIN Initiative Advanced Postdoctoral Career Transition Award to Promote Diversity (K99/R00)?
This award is similar yet distinctive form the K99/R00 award described about.  A webinar describing the BRAIN Initiative K99/R00 with associated slides is posted here.

NIH Public Access Mandate

A video with step-by-step instructions for complying with the NIH's mandatory Public Access policy. The policy requires that published journal articles resulting from NIH funded research be made publicly available on the agency's PubMed Central digital archive.
