Program Rules and Expectations

Understanding program rules and expectations helps ensure successful program participation. Noncompliance may result in termination of program participation without notice.

  • Active relationship with home institution. Global Scholars are expected to maintain an active relationship (such as active employment or active school enrollment) with their home institution during program participation period.
  • Financial support. Global Scholars must meet the minimum financial support required during program participation.
  • Medical insurance coverage. Medical insurance coverage is a mandatory requirement for all Global Scholars (and their J-2 dependents, if any) throughout program participation. Individuals with their own medical coverage can opt out from the Global Scholar Program Medical Coverage Plan by submitting a waiver request and receiving an approval from Gallagher Benefits Services. View medical insurance plans and rates.
  • Program fee payment. Program fee must be paid in full before program start date. No refunds for early withdrawal from the program are allowed. Global Scholars are subject to a $100 non-refundable application fee at the time of program application approval, even if Global Scholars subsequently withdraw from the program.
  • City of Hope clearances, mandatory training and other requirements. Global Scholars must comply with City of Hope’s onboarding and health clearance, mandatory training and other requirements before and during program participation period.
  • Full-time, on-site research activities. The Global Scholars Program is an intensive full-time research program. Global Scholars are expected to be pursuing research activities and objectives on City of Hope campuses at all times during the approved program period. Failure to pursue research activities may result in termination of program participation without notice.

Global Scholars needing to continue program activities outside the United States must contact ISSO for out-of-country requests. Each out-of-country request can be approved for up to three months.
  • Medical leave of absence. Temporary absence due to illness or a medical condition is permitted but only within a reasonable period for treatment and recovery. Extended medical absences will require a doctor’s note. No other leave will be permitted during active program participation.
  • No patient contact. No patient contact will be permitted during program participation. Incidental clinical observations as part of research studies may be permitted but require an additional approval process.
  • Global Scholars on a B-1 visitor visa. Global Scholars on B-1 visitor visas will be limited to observations and will not be able to participate in any hands-on research activities.
